So says Winks in his introduction and he's right. This is a lovely little book - warm and interesting as much for its insights into life at the time - what normal person gets their shirts starched at a laundry these days - as for an American view on NZ. 

Winks went on to become a historian, writer and academic of great reputation. He passed away in 2003.
