Lady Barker is perhaps best known here in New Zealand for her book Station Life about living with her then husband on a sheep farm in NZ. But that was just one chapter of her life, and it was a remarkable life. Born in 1831, she lived through the abolition of slavery, the Crimean War, the Indian Mutiny and the Zulu Wars - which all impacted on her personal life. She was a true Victorian woman of the colonies. But she was also an intelligent and independent thinker - at a time when women mostly fell in the shadows of their husbands. She wrote 18 books and had 6 children in her life.
