by Donna Tartt
paperback published 2002. In very good condition.
Set in the American South during the 1970s, the story revolves around twelve-year old Harriet who is determined to try and find out who murdered her brother. His death, as a child, haunts her mother and the rest of the family in this beautifully written novel. This is very different to The Secret History - Tartt's first very successful book - but it's just as good. Both a gripping story and a haunting prose.
Here are the opening lines...
"For the rest of her life, Charlotte Cleve would blame herself for her son's death because she had decided to have the Mother's Day dinner at six in the evening instead of noon, after church, which is when the Cleves usually had it."
