The story of Colonel Chapman's adventures is typical of the British way of war, and therefore begins with a complete lack of preparation. He was posted in August 1941 to a school of guerilla warfare in Singapore, which had as one of its main objects the organization of parties to stay behind in parts which the Japanese might overrun.
