This book was a book long before it was a streaming hit, in fact it was first published in 1985. It's set in a dystopian future in a highly religious society where fertile women are kept as handmaids by the ruling classes and forced to act as surrogates. Margaret Atwood has famously said that there is nothing in the fictional world of this novel that hasn't happened somewhere in the world at some time.  

In 1987 The Handmaid's Tale won the Arthur C Clarke award for best science fiction novel.
