This book recounts a six-month trip Gerald Durrell made in 1954 to South America. Along with his wife, Jacquie, the aim was to collect animals for a zoo from armadillos to anacondas.  It seems a simple way to populate a zoo and I guess that things are done differently now. But Durrell was a good writer with a real interest for wildlife and this is an enjoyable read, of its time. Also, another beautiful dust jacket here and illustrations from Ralph Thompson.
