The author was born in Blenheim in 1893 and spent much of his working life as  GP in Invercargill. During his years as a GP he had to perform crucial surgery by candle light in remote homesteads; travel dangerous roads in unreliable cars; carry out blood transfusions, anesthesia and other challenging medical emergencies. 

This is a fascinating record of his time as a doctor in the early 1900s.
