These 19 short stories tell of US soliders amd others caught up in the drama of WWII life in the South Pacific. Michener is a terrific writer and whilst these stories are never dull, they are also nuanced - sure there are swaying palms and beautiful reefs but there are also court martials, fear and madness.

This book won the Pulitzer prize for fiction in 1948.
