by Eleanor McLaglan
First published in 1965, this is the memoir of a female doctor in the early 1900s. And, honestly, it's fascinating stuff. Eleanor McLaglan arrives at Otago to study medicine in 1897, her parents are keen for her to go into medicine and whilst she might not be, that is largely irrelevant at the time. "like any obedient Victorian daughter, ...off I went to study medicine." She heads off to Dublin to witness births, which she needs to complete her medical licence, lands back in NZ and heads off to Seacliff as the Assistant Medical Officer. She deals with small pox outbreaks, private practice and the flu epidemic of 1918. All the while aware of the need to earn a living and the responsibility of being a trusted doctor.
Hardback in good condition with dust jacket. Jacket design by Garth Tapper (1927 - 1999) - a prominent NZ artist.
