Originally published in 2004, this is a wonderful work of non-fiction that delves into the history and stories of those that lived behind the Berlin Wall. Journalist Anna Funder, was working in Berlin in the 1990s when she became interested in what life had been like for East Germans behind the wall. In this book she brings together some of the people's stories - from ex-stasi men, to 'enemies' of the state. And she does it with an empathy and tremendously gripping writing.
