Nevil Shute was born in England in 1899, graduated in engineering science from Oxford and worked for a large engineering firm. And all the time he wrote novels. His first published novel Marazan came out in 1926 and he was a prolific writer, publishing some 24 novels over his lifetime whilst also working as an engineer, setting up his own aviation company and in 1950 moving to a small farm in Australia with his wife and two children.  And all this before the proliferation of productivity hacks.
