The dedication in this book says "To all the descendants of assisted immigrants who travelled steerage to Canterbury, NZ". 

It's a great look at history as it was lived by regular people. There are accounts of the journey, copies of the rules for assisted passage, the trials of daily life on arrival. It's interesting stuff and nicely told.
