by Alexander Solzhenitsyn

A stark account of a day in the life of a prisoner in a Siberian labour camp in the Stalin era. From the 5am wake up in a cell where the "frost lay two fingers thick" on the window panes, to the end of the day when he "buried his head in the thin, unwashed blanket".

This was first published in 1962 in the Soviet Union and has been republished countless times since. Solzhenitsyn himself spent 8 years in a labour camp - he was released in 1953.

This is a 1971 Penguin paperback edition. In very good condition. Previous owner's name on title page.
