Noises After Dark

This is the memoir of a doctor, newly qualified, who decides to volunteer for the Save The Children Fund in the 1980s. Motivated and moved by coverage of the Ethiopian famine he packs his bags and goes to help rebuild and run a small hospital in a northern Somali town.

These are the kind of autobiographies and memoirs that are often all too quickly forgotten as new books come out. I had never heard of this book but Tomlinson's account of his time in Somalia is fascinating, troubling and uplifting.
