He comes back from WW1 to New Zealand and travels around taking work where he can, coming across different characters and situations - farm workers, road worker, rail worker. This is an interesting snapshot of New Zealand and attitudes in the 1930s. It was John Mulgan's only fiction novel and originally published in 1939.
