This recounts the life of Grace Neill and her work and influence on the developing social structures of New Zealand in the late 1800s. Originally from Edinburgh, she ended up in New Zealand - was an advocate for women's working conditions and instrumental in nursing reform. She also had a fascinating life  - widowed young in Australia, she supported her son on her own and refused to return to the oversight of her family in Scotland. This is a story told largely by her son and he was clearly full of admiration for his mother and her formidable character.
