On a spring day in 1947 Christchurch store Ballantynes caught fire. This book recounts that day. Eldred-Grigg researched using oral testimonies and transcripts from the Royal Commission of Inquiry. He spoke to over 100 people about the fire and says that all the characters in this book lived and most have been given their real names.

It's a well researched and interestingly written story of the fire.
