This is a long (600 pages) and dense book, sub-titled 'A Diary showing how Unimportant People in London and Birmingham lived through the war years 1940-45'. And it is exactly that. the diary of a young social worker living in West London during WW2. It's an interesting reflection on how ordinary people live through extraordinary times. Easy and engaging to read and so interesting to read a perspective from someone who was there at the time as opposed to looking back through rosy coloured spectacles. 

This is a new Persephone edition. With they characteristic beautiful and carefully chosen endpapers. For this book the endpapers are a fragment of scarf design that showed a brick wall with colourful wartime slogans.
