This is a beautiful book - lovely elegant endpapers, lots of interesting black and white photos and a fold out panoramic shot of Dunedin, along with old maps of proposed tramways, etc. It's fascinating.

But it's also a really comprehensive history of Dunedin and how the city came about, how it was planned and the challenges it has faced. "An ornamental and commodious site for a town, most suitable in every respect save the distance from the deep water of the lower harbour,". This was surveyor, Frederick Tuckett's first opinion on the future site for Dunedin. He had been asked by the New Zealand Company to find a site for 'New Edinburgh'.  It was 1844.

Hardback with dust jacket in excellent condition. Published 1965.
