This is one of Nevil  Shute's most popular and much-loved novels. Originally published in 1950 it tells the story of Jean Paget who lives through some horrors during WWII in occupied Malaya. But her story begins when she travels to Australia some years later. 

Nevil Shute was a great writer, with a terrific instinct for storytelling. If you haven't read any of his books - this is a great one to start with.
