An old farmer decides to give his three daughters, and their partners, the family farm. What ensues is a fantastic study in family dynamics, sibling relationships and human nature - beautifully written and utterly gripping. There are definite overtones of King Lear here, three daughters and a powerful father. But don't let that put you off. This is above all a great story that leaves you thinking long after you turn the last page. 

It also won the Pulitzer Prize in 1992. I can't believe I had never come across Jane Smiley before reading this book, now I am always looking out for her books.
