A House For Mr Biswas

Published in 1961 and set in Trinidad,  this is the classic tale of a poor Hindu, Mr Biswas, and his lifelong pursuit of a house and independence from his wealthy-in-laws. It has been named on many best novel, must read, modern classic type lists - and it's not hard to see why. Put aside the talk of lofty themes - independence, colonisation, etc - and what you have is a great story, brilliantly told.
