Dentist memoirs are a rare find — and this one is a gem. A Dentist at Large is the autobiography of Roy Hanan, born in Invercargill in 1906. After graduating from dental school, he joined the New Zealand Army Corps and served in Europe in 1942 before returning to practise dentistry in New Zealand. Packed with personal anecdotes and illustrated throughout with wonderful black and white photographs, it's an engaging slice of New Zealand social and military history.
